Anne Fletcher
Executive Director and Principal Consultant

Dr Anne Fletcher is the Executive Director and Principal Consultant at Growing Your Knowledge (GYK) . She has over thirty years experience in the blood banking, health and university sectors. She has expertise in immunology, biochemistry, haematology, blood transfusion science, molecular biology and virology and has written over 60 scientific papers and has been an invited speaker at many scientific meetings. Dr Fletcher has successfully commercialised the outcomes of her research work. She has taught at the University of Technology and the University of Sydney and is currently an invited lecturer in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship program at The University of Sydney. She has worked in management research at Macquarie University and has a special interest in organisational development, stakeholder management, performance management, management in the not-for-profit sector, and knowledge management.

With knowledge gained from management positions in diagnostic and research laboratories, health organisations including the CRC for Vaccine Technology and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, and professional societies, together with her non-executive director experience, Dr Fletcher brings a wealth of skills and know-how to the consultancy. A wide national and international network adds to her capability to deliver efficient and customer-focused services to clients.

Dr Fletcher is the recipient of a number of awards including The Australian Academy of Science and Technological Sciences Overseas Travel Award (1986) ; the Wellcome Trust Award (1988) ; the Presidential Award from ANZSBT (1992) ; the Saal-Foley award from AIMS (1993) ; the Bicentennial Scholarship from the Sir Robert Menzies Centre for Australian Studies (1996) ; the Ruth Sanger Award (2001) , the Peter Schiff Award from the ANZSBT (2004) and the Meritorious Service Award from the Australian Red Cross Society in 2005.

Dr Fletcher is a member of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service Board and of the Consultative Council of the Victorian Cancer Agency. She is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is a member of the AusBiotech NSW Committee and was a Member of the Program Organising Committee for the National Biotechnology Conference held in Sydney in November 2006. She was also the program coordinator for AusBiotech NSW Flag Ship Event held in September 2005. Dr Fletcher was previously the President of the Australasian Society of Blood Transfusion and currently chairs the ANZSBT Research Fund Committee. Dr Fletcher's qualifications include MSc and PhD degrees from The University of Sydney and a Fellowship in Blood Transfusion from the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists.

Gerald Fletcher
Director and Legal Advisor

Mr Gerald Fletcher is a lawyer and Director of Growing Your Knowledge. He has acted as General Counsel to major Australian companies, in the Transfield Holdings Group and the John Holland Group, specialising in commercial law. Previously, Mr Fletcher was a NSW Crown Head Solicitor for the State Electricity Commission. He has been a senior partner and solicitor in the leading Sydney law practices of Lane and Lane, and Sly and Russell (now Deacons) respectively.

Mr Fletcher provides internal and external consultancy advice on matters such as confidentiality, conflicts of interest, contractual obligations, insurance, occupational health and safety as well as in public and administrative law. He acts as a special advisor to Growing Your Knowledge on regulatory and legislative compliance matters. He has degrees in Arts and Law from the University of Sydney and has a specialist qualification as a mediator having completed the Harvard Dispute Resolution Course.

Lisa Selbie - Biotechnology Consultant

Dr Lisa Selbie is a biotechnology consultant with GYK. She is currently Project Coordinator for the Australian Biotechnology Initiative for the Master of Science in Biotechnology, Johns Hopkins Advanced Academic Program, and is a lecturer in the Biotechnology graduate program. Dr. Selbie received her PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois

Dr. Selbie has expertise in project management of basic and applied research into drug development, receptor cloning and expression, and evaluation of function, particularly neuropeptide and neurotransmitter-stimulated pathways. Her skills include a sound understanding and application of cross-disciplinary research, from physiological models for drug evaluation to structural studies of potential drugs. Dr Selbie has managed teams with broad expertise, involving basic research and commercial development.

Dr Selbie has had international experience with positions in the US, UK and Australia. She has been a Project Leader in the CRC for Biopharmaceuticals, a Senior Research Officer at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Australia, and a Wellcome Trust Career Development Research Fellow in Nottingham, UK.

Dr Selbie has written and delivered courses in Molecular Basis of Pharmacology, Advanced Cell Biology and Stem Cell Biology. She has received various research awards, been active in scientific and medical research societies, spoken at many scientific conferences, holds several patents and has published 36 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Chih-Lynne Teo - Consultant

Ms Teo is a management and life sciences consultant with GYK. Her qualifications include an MBA from La Trobe University/APESMA focused on technology commercialisation where she was best international student and second overall in the graduating class. Ms Teo also has a B.Sc (Hons I, Chemistry) from the University of Sydney where she won the prize for Perspectives in Science and Technology. She earned a Graduate Diploma in Scientific Communication (Australian National University) during which she toured remote Australia presenting science shows.

Immediately prior to joining GYK, Ms Teo worked in technology transfer for the School of Chemistry, University of Sydney and the listed Australian public company, Medical Therapies. Her achievements included developing an Investigator’s Brochure which led to a collaboration agreement for clinical trials; analysis of preclinical data for regulatory consultants; inter-organisational research and financial reporting; creation and management of research and intellectual property databases; coordinated data for patent research and filings and liaison with senior commercial management, chief scientists and researchers.

Ms Teo’s previous professional experience includes management consulting with LEK Management Consulting, producing business conferences with IIR Conferences Sydney and delivering international aid in Nepal with AusAID and the Canadian Centre for International Studies and Cooperation. She speaks Mandarin, French and Bahasa Malaysia.

Julie Bayliss
International Business and Marketing Consultant

Mrs Julie Bayliss is an international business and marketing consultant with GYK and Executive Director of Bayliss Associates. Mrs Bayliss has an economics degree from the University of Sydney. She has a background in economics, finance and banking, having worked as an investment adviser and investment market analyst in financial institutions in Sydney, London and Frankfurt. As a private consultant Mrs Bayliss has undertaken a range of international business advisory and management projects for the Australian Government as well as the governments of Indonesia and Brunei. She has had an extensive career as an Australian Trade Commissioner, with assignments including Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Suva, Baghdad, Los Angeles, New Delhi and Jakarta and Moscow. She was also Australian Consul-General in Dubai and Senior Trade Commissioner for the Middle East. Mrs Bayliss has a background in the management of public issues and was a Parliamentary Press Secretary.

Roger Bayliss
International Business and Management Consultant

Mr Roger Bayliss is an international business and management consultant with GYK and Executive Director of Bayliss Associates. Mr Bayliss is qualified in science (BSc, MRACI, and CCHEM) and as a company director (GAICD). He has a background in science and marketing in the chemical industry with the Albright and Wilson group. Roger was an Australian Trade Commissioner in New York, Los Angeles, Jakarta, Suva, Singapore, and a Senior Trade Commissioner in Baghdad, New Delhi and Jakarta. He was appointed as Executive General Manager of the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) in Singapore, responsible for 10 offices in ASEAN. Mr Bayliss then moved to Dubai to manage the Middle East and Indian Ocean region for Austrade before returning to Australia in 2002. He is a non-executive director of SMEC (Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation) Holdings Limited.

Andrew Geczy
Specialist Biomedical Consultant

Professor Andrew Francis Geczy is a Specialist Biomedical Consultant with GYK and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney. Professor Geczy holds a PhD and a DSc from the University of NSW.

He has expertise in project management at a senior level in both industry and academia. In industry he has managed biomedical research projects involving teams of senior scientists and stakeholders in universities, CSIRO and other industry partners. He has also played a dominant role in the commercialization of immunodiagnostic kits as well as of therapeutics relevant to the area of animal health.

Professor Geczy specialises in co-ordinating multidisciplinary research projects. In particular, he has been intimately involved in an HIV/AIDS research consortium aimed at developing an immunotherapeutic/prophylactic against AIDS. This project involved liaising with other academic institutions and senior industry partners. He has considerable skills dealing with regulatory bodies notably NATA, the TGA and the American, Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). As an ASHI Director he has also mentored two senior scientists who were seeking ASHI Directorship

Professor Geczy has over three decades, gained considerable academic, research, project management and analytical skills. His considerable negotiation skills with stakeholders acquired in industry and academia is also of great value to GYK. He has a strong understanding of the needs of stakeholders in industry and academia and translating this into tangible commercial and scientific outcomes. Professor Geczy has assisted GYK with the evaluation of the NSW Health Implementation of Single Ethical Review of Multi-Centre Research.

Professor Geczy holds memberships with: ASHI, the Australasian South East Asian Tissue Typing Association, the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand. He has published over 130 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Alan Bowden
Marketing and Business Strategy Consultant

Mr Alan Bowden is a specialist marketing and business strategy consultant for GYK and also director and principal consultant of Technology Marketing. Mr Bowden has a BSc from Cardiff University, an MSc in Biochemical Engineering from University College, London and a postgraduate Diploma in Marketing (Macquarie University) .

Mr Bowden has had broad management experience in industry (food and chemicals) having worked for both Unilever and Dow Corning in various countries. He has held positions as technical manager, commercialisation manager and business development manager. He helped design and implement a global customer satisfaction survey for Dow Corning and organised focus groups which reviewed the use of biosensors in healthcare settings in the USA .

In 2002 he established Technology Marketing which provides marketing and strategic analysis advice to clients in the biotechnology and life science industries such as diagnostics, therapeutics and devices. He has developed a number of business plans, marketing plans, market opportunity analyses and technical evaluations for Australian companies and university commercialisation offices.

Mr Bowden has skills in analysis and interpretation of information and technical material and assembling this into succinct reports. Mr Bowden has demonstrated the ability to work with groups in project management, market planning as well as focus groups in the healthcare industry.

Mr Bowden has acted as a Consultant for Growing your Knowledge since 2004 in various projects undertaken by GYK for Australian biotechnology companies. These include a market opportunity analysis for Universal Biosensors Limited and a series of design research consultancies and focus groups in Australia and the UK for ITL.

Gavin Wigginton
Corporate Governance Expert

Mr Gavin Wigginton is a corporate governance expert with GYK and a business consultant working in the not-for-profit sector. He has expertise in organisational analysis, systems review, change management, and strategic planning. He currently specialises in the audit, development and implementation of governance structures and systems and the completion of risk analysis programmes. Mr Wigginton assisted GYK in the governance review of the Australian Stem Cell Centre which GYK undertook as part of a general review of the Centre on behalf of the Australian government.

Mr Wigginton has a background in general management through employment with both large multi-businesses in the UK and with the “not for profit” sector in Australia. In a career spanning 40 years, he has held senior line management positions with responsibility for the Strategic Planning, Finance, HR and Secretarial functions. He has also had responsibility for successfully implementing a large number of major projects involving significant changes to operational structures and systems.

Mr Wigginton is Honorary Secretary of the Australian Conservation Foundation, a Director of Research Infrastructure Support Services (RISS) and a Director of Darlingford Waters Marina Pty Ltd. He holds a B.A (from the University of Wales) and a Graduate Diploma in Operations Research (from Hull University in the UK). He is also a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Claire Golding
Human Resources Consultant

Mrs Claire Golding is a human resources consultant with GYK and Director and Principal Consultant of Optimum HR Solutions, a consultancy specialising in providing human resource consulting and management, particularly to the biotech sector.

Mrs Golding consults with clients on people management in their organisation and then helps to formulate a tailored plan of action that will produce measurable results. Mrs Golding, is tertiary qualified with a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Human Resource Management and Counselling and an Associate Diploma of Business (both from the University of New England) . Having owned and run businesses she more than understands the business drivers required by a company's human capital. She has been in the HR and Recruitment industry since 1988.

She has consulted with a variety of biotechnology companies including Cryosite Limited, BTF – Precise Microbiology and more recently with Proteome Systems Ltd, designing performance management systems, salary review criteria, training for enhanced team work, workforce planning and line management coaching.

Mrs Golding has been running Optimum HR Solutions since January 2001 and has clients in Sydney and Canberra . As well as consulting, Optimum also provides executive search and recruitment services, across a range of industries and functions.

Gordon Smith
Business and Financial Analyst

Mr Gordon Smith is a business and financial analyst with GYK and a highly experienced Business Consultant, Financial Controller, Finance Executive and Company Secretary. Mr Smith has held a number of senior finance roles including with Lilly Industries Pty Limited, Eglo Engineering (Services) Limited and Transfield Holdings Pty Limited. He has substantial management experience in all financial facets of company administration, accounting, reporting, budgeting, cost control, financial management, statutory accounts, group consolidations, corporate restructures and cash-flow forecasting and management.

Mr Smith formed Gordon Smith and Associates Pty Limited in 2002 and has since provided business consulting, financial controller and accounting services to a variety of Australian companies.

Mr Smith has a diploma in accountancy and an MBA (from Macquarie University ) . He is a Fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Practicing Accountants (FCPA) , a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Company Secretaries (FCIS) and a Member of the Graduate Management Association of Australia (MGMA).
